Holiday Handmade with A Couple of Craft Addicts

Today’s Holiday Handmade post comes from another one of my blog buddies I met at Creative Estates: Heather from A Couple of Craft Addicts. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know her outside of blogging too and she is just as nice in person as she looks on her blog. Love her!

I’m Heather from A Couple of Craft Addicts and am so excited to be participating in the Handmade Holiday series!  I was thrilled when Katie asked me to share a gift for women because I have quite a few girls on my holiday gift list this year.  I was looking to make something that everyone could use and enjoy.  I made something that will work for all the girls – from my cousin in college to my grandmother!
Magnetic frames are certainly not a new idea but they are really the perfect gift for any woman!
The project was simple to put together after I tackled my supply list.
Supplies:
-Galvanized Steel Single Flashing
-Frame (you will not be using the glass)
-Magnets
Optional:
-Material to cover steel
I went to Home Depot determined to buy a roll of metal.  I didn’t bother looking online for tips before I walked into the hardware store with a vague item in mind.  Luckily a very nice employee sent me in the right direction.  I purchased a few sheets of galvanized steel single flashing from the roofing aisle.  You can pick up an entire roll but if you are simply making a magnetic frame, you can purchase one 8″ x 12″ piece for less than a dollar!

I was sure we had a tool in our garage to cut the steel to fit an 8″ x 10″ frame.  I’m extremely clumsy with sharp tools and was a little concerned when I noticed the sticker on the back of the metal.  Luckily there were no injuries while working on this project.

I used the glass to draw a line where I needed the metal cut to fit the frame.

I wasn’t able to find a tool at home to cut the steel so I decided to try using a dull pair of scissors before going back to the hardware store.  The scissors worked perfectly.  I carefully rolled the excess metal as I was cutting.

Instead of covering the metal in fabric I chose to use lace.  The look of the frame will change completely depending on the fabric you choose.

I covered the metal and then carefully inserted it into the frame.

I replaced the piece of cardboard on the back of the frame because it helped hold the backing against the metal tightly.  I didn’t want the lace to stretch or pull.

You can use store bought magnets or make your own.  I used foam stickers and embellished brads.

I thought the flowers looked silly until I added the pretty brads.

I used hot glue to attach felt to the back of the flowers and then glued on the magnets.

You could easily personalize this gift with different magnets.  If you don’t want the frame to be too specific you could always just add a fun picture.  I’m looking forward to going through old photos to make some fun frames for all the girls on my holiday gift list!

Thanks to Katie for letting me share this fun gift idea!  We hope you’ll stop by to see us at A Couple of Craft Addicts!
