As a mom, I seem to always be on the lookout for two different things: a new meal to serve my family and ways to incorporate learning into everyday activites. The best is when I figure out a way to do both at once!
This may seem like any ordinary breakfast sandwich, but when you add in all kinds of learning activities, it takes on a whole new life!
Smart and Final carries oodles of products and I’ve always gravitated towards the First Street brand. It occurred to me though that comparing and contrasting various brands would be an awesome way for my son to learn evaluative skills. You can read all about my shopping trip at Smart and Final here and get my thoughts on the process!
A couple things really stood out to me about the packaging: the Farmer John package only showed a peek of the bacon, while the First Street Brand showed all of it’s bacon-y goodness off. Also, I really liked that the First Street Premium Sliced Bacon came in a 16 oz package; the smallest Farmer John offered was double that. That is *a lot* of bacon.
It’s time to get cooking the bacon! We like to cook ours in our skillet. I did notice that the Farmer John bacon stayed in strips, while the First Street bacon stuck together more but that was honestly the only advantage that the Farmer John Bacon had over the First Street Premium Sliced Bacon.
Since we all know that bacon isn’t the healthiest of food items, I enjoyed that the First Street bacon was a thinner cut. The thicker cut of the Farmer John bacon made it chewier; not my favorite.
When the bacon was finished and cooling and while I was putting together the sandwiches, I had Luke complete a quick math acitivty with the bacon. Who knew that you could “play” with your food enough to practice counting, subtraction, and shapes?
Now for the directions to create your own Bacon Breakfast Sandwich!
