Today is the day I’m kicking off a new series dedicated to making learning enjoyable for our kidlets this summer: the Summer Fun Reading Series! As a teacher and now as a parent, I know how important it is to continue that learning process throughout those summer months, but it gets tricky when kids just want to play. I’m showing you easy ways to make sure that you get that educational aspect in with a twist to keep your children engaged. Every now and then, I’ll be sharing a great children’s book and an activity, craft, or recipe to enhance the learning. Sounds like a blast, right?
The first book we’ll be working with is Miss Nelson is Missing. It’s classic and one of my favorites!
In case you’ve never read Miss Nelson is Missing (you’re missing out!), I’m going to give you a brief run-down. Miss Nelson is a teacher with an exceptionally naughty class. One day, instead of Miss Nelson arriving to teach, Miss Viola Swamp shows up. Miss Swamp is ugly and mean and quickly shapes the kids up into model students. When Miss Nelson returns days later, the kids are thrilled and on their best behavior. On the last page, the reader learns that it was Miss Nelson dressed as Miss Swamp the whole time.
Luke was enthralled while reading the book and thought it was so funny that it was actually Miss Nelson dressed as Miss Swamp the whole time.

I thought it would be great to have Luke and Reagan make a mask of their own, just like Miss Nelson’s. Reagan wanted no part of it (she was more interested in her snacks), but Luke was all about it. He was so intense as he colored his masks.
When he was finished coloring, I cut them out. His safety scissors weren’t getting the job done, so I helped him out. We left his masks at that, but you could make them more sturdy by hot gluing a paint stir stick to the back. Also, we might add more 3-D elements next time like yarn for hair and googly eyes.
The best part? Luke had a blast and is already asking when we get to read another book. Success!
