*FREE* Printable Back Pack Tags

When I was teaching second and third grade, without fail, there were multiple kids that would walk in with the same super adorable back pack and on a few occasions back packs were even sent home with the wrong kiddo. Not only did that make for a stressful situation for me as the teacher, but it was also heart breaking to hear the phone calls from the parents with the kids crying in the background. Because I’m hoping to prevent the same situation for my own school-age children now, I’ve created some super cute FREE printable back pack tags to solve the problem.

Now I know what you’re thinking: why don’t I just write my child’s name on the inside of their bag? I have the names written on the inside of both of my kids’ bags, but I find it hard to believe that any teacher hurrying to get kids out the door at the end of the day will stop to be able to check to see if Luke has his back pack on and not the other kid’s.

Materials:

  • Printable Back Pack Tags, in your choice of style
  • coordinating card stock
  • adhesive
  • hole punch
  • ribbon

Directions:

1. Cut the tags out and trim the coordinating card stock to be slightly larger. My card stock was cut to 4-1/8″ x 2-1/8″.

2. Use your adhesive of choice to adhere the printable tag to the card stock.

3. Punch a hole through the layered tag.

4. Thread your ribbon through the hole and tie to your child’s back pack.

Note: I chose to have my tags laminated at my local copy center before punching the hole and attaching them to help with longevity.

I’m just writing this as a concerned citizen. I don’t have a child myself but I do have a stepson. Growing up we saw so many videos, had stories told to us and more on “talking to strangers” when we were kids and one thing that seemed common in almost every lesson was that we should never wear anything with our names on them because “bad people” could use that against us to get us to trust them if they were able to see our names. Perhaps you shouldn’t put out those kinds of products or just make tags that have “If this is found call ….” instead of using a name. Maybe there could be another way to customize the tags instead of names? Just my thoughts and opinions.

While I appreciate your candor and concern, I think there’s most definitely a way to utilize these tags without showing the information to everyone. I’ve had these tags on my kids back packs for two years now and my kids know that when their backpacks are on, the tag is tucked between their body and the backpack. No one ever sees them with the tag out. Additionally, you could easily tuck the tag inside a zippered pocket in their bag so the information is protected. It really is up to the parents to use them as they see fit.

That’s great that you do it that way. Maybe you could put a statement out with your blog entry with suggestions along those lines for those that don’t think of those kinds of things. I know you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink but at least you could provide the suggestions. Or not…
